Training the next generation of clinical, research and health system leaders. Clinicians in the 21st century will face many challenges that require not only clinical skills but also a broader understanding of public health and disease-prevention issues. DACP’s teaching programs offer educational experiences that give medical students, residents and fellows the broad range of skills they need to be successful in their professions. The DACP-directed Center for Population Health Education at Harvard Medical School was formed to integrate population health themes into the curriculum. This Center develops content for courses that will give medical students a sophisticated understanding of how individual patient care, innovations in science and medicine and changes in health policy and financing will affect the health of populations.
Residents gain the skills and knowledge they need to become outstanding physicians and health care leaders in the DACP-directed Primary Care Residency program. Residents practice with a preceptor at a multidisciplinary medical center and manage a panel of patients. They also attend seminars on topics such as the doctor-patient relationship, disease prevention, geriatrics, end-of-life care, ethics and health care policy. In addition, they are paired with a DACP faculty mentor to learn about research and population science and how to integrate these themes into patient care. DACP leads this program in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
