  • Understanding and overcoming disparities in care

Studies show that vulnerable populations, such as the poor and racial and ethnic minorities, are more likely to develop chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, but less likely to receive or engage in appropriate care. DACP investigators are working hard to both identify and eliminate these persistent disparities.

DACP’s Drug Policy Research Group examines how differences in health care contribute to disparities and how they can be lessened or eliminated. For example, they are currently working on studies to improve the quality of care for minority and non-English speaking diabetic patients insured by Harvard Pilgrim. In addition, the group examines how medication coverage policies, for instance those of different states’ Medicaid programs, affect the health and well-being of minorities, the disabled, the chronically ill and the elderly.

DACP’s Parent Asthma Communication Experience (PACE) project studies why many African-American and Latino children with persistent asthma do not use preventive medications as directed by national guidelines. This National Institute for Child Health-supported study is surveying parents and providers to determine why these children are not receiving or using the medication they need to control their asthma.
